Descend the refurbished “streak o’ lightning” path to reach the S shore of Loch Muick (NGR 273 818). Incidentally, Loch Muick means the 'Loch of the Swine' in Gaelic. A path joins a good track. For those itching for a longer hike, it's the starting point for 4 different ways of walking up Lochnagar Cross and walk round the north end of the loch, skirting above some fine sandy beaches, to a boathouse. The track approaches forestry surrounding the Royal lodge at Glas-allt-Shiel. There are excellent views down the glen and across Loch Muick. Head along the S shore of Loch Muick and climb the zig-zag path above the Black Burn. The area has many walking routes and a variety of wildlife including grouse and deer. Loch Muick Circuit This low level circular walk starts from the Spittal of Glen Muick car park. The Gairn on the other hand is a straight out and back walk with no real alternative routes along the way. In the end we decided on Loch Muick for two reasons, firstly because Glen Muick offers a few alternatives in case the weather deteriorates and also it's a circular walk. Head NE’wards along this path for about 3.5 miles to arrive back at the Spittal bus park. Although there is an indicated route, this walk goes in the opposite direction. The path then leaves the lochside and heads northeast, soon joining a track. Quite simply it's a stunning loch with a great 3 hour walk. There is a great little walk around Loch Muick, beautiful scenery, a bit of history with Queen Victoria's 'summer house' at Glas Allt Sheil and we came across a small herd of 17 red deer stags as we made our way back towards the visitor centre.
